Combined Arms Consultancy was approached by Mindbody via an ex-student of Dr Leon Levin, who was one of his online students who had a great experience in his class when he was teaching business consultancy at RMIT. The challenge was to create a more human-centric approach within the sales team to enable stronger relationships to evolve between Mindbody and its client base. Historically, that relationship had been too transactional, and the software focused on an approach that was not servicing the client base or facilitating growth.
The approach taken by Combined Arms Consultancy was to create a ½ day work shops whose objectives were outlined as follows.
•Clients are completely serviced. (“Other” & “Communication” session)
•Relationships are enhanced and captured. (“Self” & “Other” sessions)
•Additional opportunities are identified. (“Communication” session)
•A learning environment prevails. (“Planning” & “Communication” sessions)
•Commitment by staff is beyond a “paycheck.” (“Self” & “Communication” sessions)
The four targeted sessions covered
- Self–understanding the individual's core skills that are essential in being a more effective individual and translating that to assisting clients and thus enhancing the culture within Mindbody itself.
- The other – Understanding the client’s needs, over and above the transactional nature of the software, thus creating a relationship that transcends Mindbody from being another service provider to a colleague, a partner, someone can be emotionally committed to their business, and vice versa.
- Planning - Explored the agility of planning and tools that need to be considered in implementing and creating a plan for your client. Understanding the core client needs and developing a pathway to service those needs was developed.
- Communication - Explored the nature of communication and how effective and authentic communication reinforces initial relationships while building a human bridge for a long-term commitment to Mindbody.
A workshop booklet was created to enable the participants to have a reference moving forward. Also, each student received a copy of “The Supercommunicator,” an excellent volume that breaks down effective communication habits.
The workshop was a success. The feedback indicated that the activities opened new pathways and thoughts that the team had not considered. It also directly affected the culture of the group so significantly that other departments noticed the change within the sales team. It also had a direct impact on how the clients saw the team and was the genesis of the team building stronger relationships with third parties.
